Riddles
Did your student come home with an odd riddle? At the end of the day, we play a few games if they clean up fast and are ready for the bus. Sometimes I share a riddle Here's the latest:
"What is flat but rolls, round but square, one but many?"
Oh also, I never tell the answer.

Free eBook!
Over the last two weeks we've been researching "Community Life" as a part of Lead 21, our new reading curriculum. The students created an ebook as a part of demonstrating their learning. Click here to download it. This actually works best from a tablet, since it will go right into your ebooks reader. We used an iPad app called Book Creator. (And thank you to the parents who gave me an iTunes card! I purchased this app with part of your gift.)

It looks like I have not updated the website for a while. We've been busy!! I'll be sending this letter home on January 9th.

Three Ring
I know most parents have been receiving emails from www.threering.com that lead you to artifacts from your child's day. We are beginning a new chapter in our online citizenship! Students will now reflect on their learning, as captured in each photo or video. For the most part, first grade writing is not polished, grammatically correct prose. You will see reflections that are phonetically spelled (like "science" spelled "siens" or "sins"), missing punctuation, and unusual capitals. Celebrate the effort! (Or should I write "selabrat the efrt"?) But please respond kind words to you child's effort as you notice their hard work. Kids glow when they read parents' encouragements!!
I love, love Three Ring, by the way. I imagine that it is obvious. Click on over to my portfolio - collaborations to see how I've shared it to other educators.

Common Core State Standards
Ever wonder about the Common Core? Have you seen posts on Facebook bashing it? There are haters everywhere. Here is a good explanation about it. Like any system, its not perfect. But its better than what we had before. It is ambitious and systematic and logical. I'm a fan.
